LINAC (Linear Accelerator)

LINAC (Linear Accelerator) is one of the new advancements in external beam radiation Treatment for cancer.

PURPOSE OF THE PROCEDURE
Radiation therapy eradicates cancer destroying the ability of cancer cells to proliferate. The linear accelerator with its latest capabilities offers enhanced precision in eradicating tumors while minimizing normal tissue effects.

PREPARATION
Patients undergo tests to define and localize the tumor. Then patients undergo simulation and treatment planning before patients are scheduled to start the treatment.

TREATMENT PROCEDURE
Treatments are usually given every day, 5 days a week except Saturdays and Sundays. Each treatment lasts 2-3 minutes. A treatment course way last from 2-7 weeks. Most patients are out-patients. During treatments, patients lie down on the treatment table and asked to keep still in the prescribed position.

PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES
Common side effects vary according to the area being treated. Skin may show some redness and darkening. There may be some sore throat and difficulty of swallowing and dryness of
saliva. There may be a mild diarrhea or urinary symptoms.

TREATMENT RESULTS
Beneficial effects of treatment usually manifest after 3 days during treatment to 4-6 weeks after completion of treatment.
