The Medical City Brings Hope to Cancer Patients with New Technologies

Every day at The Medical City Cancer Institute, we strive to provide our patients with a complete and world class cancer care. That’s why we offer the latest technologies to provide accurate cancer diagnosis and help plan the treatment tailor-fit to the patient.

Complete care means combining the power of technology with compassionate and expert care from our highly trained medical professionals.

It also involves walking with the patient during the entire cancer journey – from early detection, diagnosis, management, and survivorship.

PET/CT

The Medical City is home to the latest and most modern PET/CT imaging system that features advanced capabilities used for assessment of cancer tumor – such as staging of cancer to help doctors determine the most appropriate treatment option and re-staging to evaluate patient’s response to cancer treatment.

PET stands for positron emission tomography. CT stands for computed tomography. PET creates an image that reflects the body’s metabolic and biochemical activity using a low level of radiation, useful for targeting tumors. CT sees a 360-degree view of the body, useful for taking 3D pictures. Combining the images from the two scanners provides a complete picture of the tumor’s location, size, and shape. This will be available starting next month at The Medical City.

IORT

Intra Operative Radiation Therapy or IORT is a new technique that allows patients to safely receive their radiation treatment at the same time as their surgery for breast cancer. Radiation is given directly to the area where the cancer was, and for some patients with early stage breast cancer, this may be the only radiation treatment they will need.

In IORT, all of the needed radiation can be delivered at one time. IORT saves time, and is more convenient for the patient. Patient’s recovery period becomes shorter and she can return to normal activity earlier than the usual. The radiation dose in IORT is also smaller than the traditional radiotherapy. Low energy x-ray radiation is immediately absorbed into the tumor cavity thus sparing unaffected/healthy tissues.

MRI Fusion Prostate Biopsy

Prostate cancer care relies, above all, on the accurate and early detection of cancer sites. Currently, the only means available to determine the presence of cancer in the prostate and establish the corresponding prognosis is biopsy, either through transrectal or transperineal approach.

The Medical City now offers a fully integrated fusion biopsy system specifically created for personalized prostate care − MRI Fusion Prostate Biopsy. With this technology, “targeted” biopsies are made possible by the fusion of ultrasound images of the prostate with MRI scans, in real time during the procedures. The advantages of this include faster, more accurate and more reliable diagnosis, pre-biopsy visualization of potential cancer lesions, and precise targeting of biopsies. An accurate and more reliable diagnosis translates to cancer care that is more personalized to the patient and the disease.

All these new offerings, allow us to offer our patients hope. Hope that is bigger than cancer.

Hope, that together, cancer can be defeated.
