Premier health institution The Medical City is the host of the 9th Biennial Congress of the Asian Society of Stoma Rehabilitation (ASSR) on May 12-13, 2016 at the Augusto M. Barcelon auditorium, 6th floor, Podium Bldg. at The Medical City in Ortigas Avenue, Pasig City, Philippines.

In partnership with the Philippine Society for Colon and Rectal Surgery, it will be the first time that the convention will be held in the Philippines and at least 200 international and local delegates are expected to attend. The speakers are experts in stoma rehabilitation and related cases from across the Asian region.

The scientific program, according to ASSR Director General Dr. Katsuhisa Shindo, will focus on providing an intensive study on the various aspects of stoma rehabilitation. It also aims to enrich and deepen the scientific basis of ostomy care while developing and strengthening ties among all delegates from participating countries.

Congress President Dr. Manuel Francisco T. Roxas said this convention aims to promote the active role of the Philippines, especially The Medical City, in the field of stoma and wound care for patients. “The Medical City houses one of the busiest stoma and wound care clinics in the country,” he said. Dr. Roxas, who is also TMC’s Chairman of the Department of Surgery and Head of TMC’s Colorectal Clinic, wants to further strengthen the role of TMC in stoma and wound care in the country.

Congress Vice President Rhyan A. Hitalla said “ostomy care in the Philippines is now becoming a trend, wherein more nurses and other allied health care professionals are now involved and interested. It is where doctors, nurses, and other health care professionals work hand in hand as partners in giving compassionate and competent ostomy care. That is why the congress aims to provide topics that are multidisciplinary and from speakers who are experts in their field from different institutions, locally and internationally,” said Hitalla, the manager of The Medical City’s Stoma and Complex Wound Care Clinic.

Topics to be tackled include “Stoma Creation in the Era of Modern Surgery,” “Stoma Complications requiring Re-Operations,” “Updates on Stoma Creation: The Colostomy vs. Ileostomy debate revisited,” The Importance of Pre-Operative Site Marking in Ostomy Creation,” “Use of Modern Day Dressings and Appliance in Management of Peri-Stomal Skin Irritation and Complications,” “Diet and Nutrition for Ostomates,” “Urostomies: Why, How, and When?,” and “The Importance of Colonic Irrigation for Ostomy Patients,” among others.

There will be a gala night on May 12 at the Marco Polo Hotel in Ortigas Avenue, Pasig City.

The Medical City’s Stoma and Complex Wound Care Clinic was established to cater to the individual needs of patients with ostomy appliances, pressure ulcers, wounds and sores. Doctors, nurses and ostomates are welcome to attend this congress.
