Gift of Liquid Gold

A mother's breastmilk is the best gift she can give to her infant; or for other reasons, she can donate so that other babies can receive the same gift of nourishment.

The Medical City Lactation Center' Milk Bank provides mothers in and outside of the hospital an opportunity to donate their precious breastmilk so that more infants can have access to mankind's best milk!

See how to help infants with medical conditions receive the same kind of love through breastmilk and gain from its benefits.

Why should I donate to the TMC Lactation Center Milk Bank?

Breast milk does not only provide nutrition, it is also a lifesaving medicine especially for high risk babies. In cases when parents are not able to provide their own, milk banks become the source of processed donor breast milk for these babies.

Likewise, donating breast milk is not just beneficial for the recipients, it is also beneficial for the donors. For moms who have an overproduction of milk, benefits will include lighter feeling of breasts, fewer leakage issues, reduced risk of mastitis and easier breastfeeding.

How will a mother qualify to be a milk donor?

Any mother who has excess of breast milk supply can become a milk donor. Once the consent form is filled out, the TMC Lactation Center has a donor screening process. This includes testing for HIV and Hepatitis B. Test results are valid for six months (if done already), or can be arranged and done in TMC for free. Once cleared, the center is ready to accept your milk donations.

Are donors paid for their milk donation?

No, but all testing, processing, storage and admin fees will be free of charge. Any milk bags used by the donor will also be replaced by the center.

Can frozen milk be donated?

Yes, you can donate previously stored frozen breast milk as long as guidelines in the storage of breast milk were followed.

What medications can be taken and still be a milk donor?

Most commonly used medications taken by the donors are safe.

When a regular donor is sick, can she still donate milk?

Yes, she can still donate her breast milk after common illnesses. However, it is best to consult our Human Milk Bank staff and Lactation specialists for advice.

How much breast milk needs to be donated?

There is no amount too little or too much. Every drop counts especially to our small babies in the NICU.

What happens to the donated milk?

All donated milk is processed and stored in the center. This serves as supply for our NICU babies, as well as outpatient babies who need breast milk. Parents of outpatient babies just need to secure a consent form, and bring their doctor's request for breast milk, or a medical abstract of the patient should the baby be admitted in another institution. Dispensing of processed breast milk for babies other than those admitted in our hospital's NICU will depend on availability.
