Hearing Conservation Program

themedicalcity blue logo

This is a program where patients receiving chemotherapeutic agents (Cisplatin, Carboplatin, Oxaliplatin, Nitrogen, Mustard, Methotrexate, Vincristine, Dactinomycin, Bleomycin, etc) as well as antituberculosis drugs like Streptomycin are monitored for the development/progression of hearing loss.

Why do we need audiological monitoring in ototoxicity?

“The WHO has identified ototoxicity as one of the main preventable causes of deafness and an outcome that can be most directly influenced by healthcare professionals”

By monitoring for ototoxicity, we may be able to prevent deterioration of hearing sensitivity and thus enhance the quality of life of the patient.

Who will benefit from the program?

Patients taking chemotherapeutic and antituberculosis drugs will have the benefit of preventing or avoiding further deterioration of hearing.

What tests will be done?

Audiological tests like Otoacoustic Emissions, Auditory Brainstem Response and Puretone Audiometry are available at the Hearing and Dizziness Center.
