What is a Pap Smear Test?

A Pap Smear in the Philippines is a screening test to detect abnormal cells on the cervix. During the test, a healthcare provider will use a small brush or spatula to collect cells from the surface of your cervix. These cells are then examined in a laboratory for abnormalities.

The Pap Smear is important because it helps detect changes in the cells of the cervix that may be precancerous or cancerous.

Who Should Get a Pap Smear Test and How Often?

It is recommended that all women over age 21 who are sexually active get a Pap Smear test in the Philippines every three years. Women aged 30 and above should have the test every five years, or more frequently if they are at higher risk of developing cervical cancer.

Other factors which can increase your risk include smoking cigarettes and/or having multiple sexual partners. It is important to speak with your doctor about your risk factors so you can decide what frequency of testing is best for you.

How is the Pap Smear Test Performed?

The Pap Smear test is usually performed during a routine pelvic exam. During the test, your doctor or healthcare provider will use a small brush or spatula to collect cells from the surface of your cervix.

These cells are then sent to a laboratory for further testing and analysis. The results of the test will be available in a few weeks. If abnormal cells are detected, your doctor may recommend further testing or treatments.
