Starting Out Right: An Essential Health Check for Couples before Getting Married

To say that your wedding day is one of the most special days of your life is an understatement. You and your partner are entering a new phase of your life… together. And what better way to start it than by having preventive health checks to make sure that you are both in tiptop shape health wise.

Apart from the basic tests that one needs to undergo regularly (or annually) to assess risks and screen for disease, the couple may also opt to prioritize a fertility check before tying the knot.

“A personalized health check can help assess one’s health status, including level of fertility. If you are planning to start a family, it’s highly recommended that you undergo a customized health check to determine the presence of any risk factors that may affect your chances of having a child,” said Dr. Denise Herrera Lavilles, section head for adult wellness, The Medical City – Center for Wellness and Aesthetics (TMC-CWA).

Fertility issues are not always a woman's problem. Both women and men can have problems that cause infertility. Infertility refers to the inability of a couple to conceive after one year of regular sexual intercourse, without the use of contraceptives or after six months, if the woman is 35 years of age or older. Women who can get pregnant but are unable to stay pregnant may also be infertile.

Dr. Lavilles said discovering male and female fertility problems early can mean earlier treatment and a successful pregnancy.

TMC- CWA offers customized, optimized, personalized (COP) health check packages for both men and women. If fertility is a concern, your health check packages may be designed to include blood tests, hormonal evaluation, imaging studies, sperm analysis and other special procedures that provide the necessary information about one’s natural ability to produce offspring.

“It’s better to go into this new phase of your life, fully aware of your health condition. For you to be able to take care of your partner, you need to take care of yourself as well,” said Dr. Lavilles.

Here are some health tips for the bride and groom-to-be:

• Consult your doctor for additional advice on how to improve your nutrition through anti-oxidant and phytonutrient–rich food. This will help you prepare for the big day.
• Drink eight to 10 glasses of water a day. This will boost your energy, help with weight management and detoxification, as well as leave your skin glowing.
• Exercise. It enhances mood, libido and sleep, making you look and feel better overall.
• Rest and get about eight hours of sleep a day.
• For beautiful skin, consult your dermatologist as early as six months before the wedding. Your skin will be assessed to determine the kind of treatment that is best for you. When it comes to being a beautiful bride or a dashing groom, getting the best services does matter. TMC-CWA offers skin lightening, skin rejuvenating, and skin tightening services. • Keep arms, hands, legs and feet soft and hydrated by regularly applying a hydrating body lotion.
• To lessen the stress and anxiety, have a massage before your wedding day.

As the special day approaches, take extra care not just of your looks but your health as well. Remember that health and happiness start with you. Congratulations and may your wedding day be the beginning of a healthy and happy life together!
