The Teleophthalmology Program of The Medical City won the Gold Award at the Asian Hospital Management Awards held last August 28 to 29 in Cebu City. The Program won in the Innovations in Healthcare IT category, a new category in this year's awards. The entry is one of the 308 contest entries submitted by 82 hospitals in 12 countries to the 11 categories at stake.

The Teleophthalmology Program is spearheaded by Dr. Paolo S. Silva and Dr. Alfonso Bengzon. It is one of the services of the TMC Eye Center and administered by the Special Services Division under Aura J. Guinto. The program provides a very innovative service where evaluation of countless Filipino patients at risk for diabetic retinopathy is made possible through a secure and reliable retinal imaging supported by a robust information technology infrastructure. This is the first such program in the Philippines.

TMC congratulates also the entire Teleophthalmology team that includes Dr. Sherman Valero, Dr. Ricardo Papa, and Dr. Milagros Arroyo of the Department of Ophthalmology; Jocelyn Erni, Noel Cruz and the rest of Eye Center's front liners; and Rommel Galapon, Tereska Quisao and the IT group.

The award was accepted by Dr. Ali Bengzon himself during the Gala Dinner held on the second day of the Conference. Together with him in the awarding ceremony were Aura Guinto, Leticia E. Carolina, VP for Nursing Services Division, and Dr. Erlinda C. Oracion, Quality Clinical Director for the Quality and Safety Division. The award was presented by Steven Yeo, Executive Vice-President of DHR International (Singapore).
