In celebration of Cardiac Rehabilitation Week, The Medical City held a series of activities aimed at focusing on the contributions of cardiac rehab to the improvement of the health and physical performance of individuals diagnosed with heart disease or at risk for heart disease. The celebration also increased awareness to the role of cardiac rehabilitation in reducing the potentially devastating effects of heart disease.

From June 16 to 21, 2014, video testimonials of cardiac rehab patients were played in the hospital lobby. Each patient affirmed the benefits of TMC's Cardiac Rehab program - improves cardiovascular health, prevents the occurrence and or progression of cardiovascular disease, reduces the risks of heart attack, stroke, or need for future surgery, prevents readmission after an event and improves quality of life.

The Cardiac Rehab Unit under the Cardiovascular Center also sponsored a free movie day and Bingo games on June 18 and 19 respectively. The movie "Something's Gotta Give" was shown at the Augusto Barcelon auditorium. The film stars Jack Nicholson as a 63-year-old wealthy playboy and smoker who had a heart attack. His doctor played by Keannu Reeves taught him healthy lifestyle modifications so he could cope with his condition.

Patients also took time out from their cardiac rehab sessions to play Bingo games with their families and the Cardiac rehab staff. After all, Cardiac rehab is also a place where camaraderie and continuous support are commonplace. Lucky players won exciting prizes which included a LED TV and other gift packs.

The Cardiac rehab program at TMC is also known as TMC CARES or Cardiac Rehabilitation & Secondary Prevention Program. TMC CARES is a three-phase program namely Phase 1 or In-hospital Phase, Phase 2 or Out-Patient Phase and Phase 3 or Out-Patient Maintenance.

“Here at TMC CARES, we evaluate our patients medically and then we tailor their program based on our diagnosis. The medical supervision that we can give is very important for these patients, something they cannot get from health clubs or fitness centers,” says Dr. Carlos P. R. Esguerra, Consultant-Director of TMC CARES.

Under a cardiac rehab program, patients are supervised while exercising. Their diet, weight and body mass index (BMI), cholesterol and sugar levels are monitored.

TMC CARES has six components-- medical evaluation, nutritional counseling, risk factors, physical activity counseling, exercise training/testing, and psychosocial evaluation and support.

TMC CARES is highly cost effective with flexible payment terms. If you or a loved one is recovering from a heart condition or heart surgery or would simply like more information on cardiac rehabilitation, you may contact The Medical City at 988-7000 or 988-1000 ext. 6461 or 6299.
