What is Atopic Dermatitis?
AD is a chronic, recurring, itchy inflammatory condition of the skin.

What are the Signs & Symptoms?

  • Red to brownish-gray colored patches
  • Itchiness
  • Thickened, cracked or scaly skin
  • Raw, sensitive skin from scratching
  • Location begins on the cheeks and extensor surfaces for infants
  • Flexural areas (back of the knees and the insides of the armpits, elbows, and groin) for older children and adults

How does one get Atopic Dermatitis?
The exact cause of atopic dermatitis is unknown, but it may result from a combination of inherited tendencies for sensitive skin, a breakdown of the skin barrier and a malfunction in the body's immune system.

What are the Triggering Factors?

  • Sweat
  • Changes in temperature
  • Stress
  • Dust
  • Type of clothing material
  • Smoke
  • Foods
  • Long baths or showers

How is AD diagnosed?
There is NO one definitive test to diagnose atopic dermatitis.
It is usually diagnosed based on an examination of the patient’s skin and a careful detailed review of the medical history.

How is AD managed?
MEDICATIONS:

  • Corticosteroid creams or ointments to reduce inflammation
  • Antibiotics for bacterial skin infections
  • Oral antihistamines to relieve itchiness
  • Immunomodulators, such as Tacrolimus (Proptopic) and Pimecrolimus (Elidel), also to reduce inflammation, but are non-steroidal compounds

SKIN CARE:

  • Mild cleansers
  • Moisturizers

How is Severe AD managed?
Phototherapy (UVA/UVB/NBUVB), for very severe cases

How does one prevent worsening of AD?

  • Bathe less frequently and keep water contact as brief as possible.
  • Use mild cleansers.
  • Dry by patting gently.
  • Moisturize regularly.
