COVID-19 Requirements
& Guidelines

(On a hospital-wide and per institute basis)
Updated as of August 17, 2021

The Medical City has firmly established a two-in-one hospital system to ensure the safety of its patients – COVID and non-COVID – and all hospital staff. A year and a half into the pandemic, we stay true to our commitment to provide our patients a safe and reliable place to receive care. However, in the face of a more transmissible Delta variant of SARS-CoV-2 and a resurgence of cases where Metro Manila is once again the epicenter, the following guidelines for admission and COVID-19 testing must be observed at TMC Ortigas beginning Thursday, August 19, 2021, to provide additional protection to our patients and staff.

  • All patients for elective admission must present a negative RT-PCR test done within THREE days of the admission date or scheduled inpatient procedure.
  • All admissions from the ER presenting with or without respiratory symptoms must undergo a chest X-ray and a COVID-19 PCR-based test.
  • VISITORS ARE NOT ALLOWED for now in all inpatient nursing units. Each patient is allowed one companion only. If the patient requires a private duty nurse (PDN), only the PDN and one other companion are allowed in the patient’s room.
  • All designated companions must also present a negative RT-PCR test done within THREE days of the patient’s admission date. If the companion needs to leave the hospital premises for any reason, a symptom screen must be performed before thecompanion is allowed back in to the nursing unit.
  • Asymptomatic patients for admission/inpatient elective procedures and asymptomatic designated companions who have recovered from COVID-19 within the last THREE MONTHS of the admission date or scheduled procedure are NOT required to present a repeat COVID-19 RT-PCR swab test provided that they will present a medical certificate from their LGU and/or Attending Physician attesting to their recovered status (i.e. isolation period has been completed).
  • RT-PCRs done outside TMC Ortigas (including the saliva RT-PCR from the Philippine Red Cross) are acceptable.
  • The family and friends of a patient who is in acutely critical condition are allowed to visit the patient. The visit must be coordinated with the head nurse of the unit. Family and friends who intend to visit must not be under quarantine and must be asymptomatic at the time of the visit. Adequate physical distancing must be observed inside the patient’s room.
  • Companions are prohibited in the COVID-19 units except for patients who require assistance with ambulation, are frail and at high-risk for falls, and other similar situations as determined by the attending physician or head nurse.

The new requirement to get tested for COVID-19 prior to admission applies to all patients, regardless of vaccination status. While we affirm that the vaccines are the best means to protect oneself from COVID-19, we acknowledge that even fully vaccinated individuals may still get infected, may present with less, if any, symptoms, and may still transmit the virus when infected. No COVID vaccine is found to be 100% effective but immunization greatly reduces the risk of hospitalization and death.

These new guidelines are therefore implemented to ensure the utmost safety of both our patients and our staff. We would like to underscore the importance of protective measures such as wearing of masks, practicing hand hygiene and physical distancing, and avoiding crowded places. If you are still unvaccinated, get vaccinated when it’s made available to you. We will provide regular updates as we continue to assess the situation.

Thank you.
