The Medical City Department of Surgery is at the forefront of delivering the best service in the area of surgical procedures. The department is manned by a distinguished staff of more than 200 surgeons, all of whom are experienced and recognized experts in their various fields of specialization.
The department prides itself of a sound number of surgical cases yearly, ranging from:
• Open surgery - Traditional type of surgery where an adequate incision is made for visualization, insertion of instruments and extraction of specimens can be done.
• Laparoscopic surgery – (also called minimally invasive, minimal access surgery or keyhole surgery) is a modern surgical technique in which operations are done through small incisions (usually 0.5 to 1.5 cm.) The laparoscopic approach makes use of smaller incisions, all less than an inch long, with a camera that is connected to a TV monitor to help the surgeon view the surgery on the screen. This approach results in significantly less post-operative pain and discomfort with faster recovery and return to full activities and work on the part of the patient.
• Cardiac and Thoracic Surgeries - surgical treatment of diseases affecting organs inside the thorax (the chest/lungs) and conditions of the heart (heart disease)
• Urologic Surgery – surgeries involving the kidneys, ureters, bladder, prostate, and sexual organs.
• Neurosurgery - is the neurology specialty concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of disorders which affect any portion of the nervous system including the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and extra-cranial cerebrovascular system
• Plastic reconstructive and aesthetic surgery - is a specialty concerned with the restoration of form and function. Though cosmetic or aesthetic surgery is the better-known kind of plastic surgery, plastic surgery is not all cosmetic as it includes many types of reconstructive surgery, hand surgery, microsurgery, and the treatment of burns and scars.
• Kidney and liver transplantation – a cure to end stage renal or liver disease with transplant surgery
• Robotic-assisted surgeries - technological developments that use robotic systems to aid in surgical procedures
The department is the pioneer in robotic-assisted surgeries in the country and has the distinction of doing the most number of laparoscopic surgeries annually in the country.
Surgeries are done at the Surgery Suite which has 12 rooms, are well-equipped for various surgeries and staffed with nurses and technicians trained for a specific subspecialty. Within the operating room is an armamentarium of cutting edge tools such as the Da Vinci surgical robot and the Pentero microscope.
Urologic and colorectal procedures are done at the Center for Endoscopic and Physiologic Studies, which is equipped for extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (for kidney stones), endoscopy (an instrument that is used to examine the interior of a hollow organ or cavity of the body) and endoanal ultrasound (that evaluates disease of the rectum and anal canal). Plastic, regenerative and aesthetic surgeries are done at the Wellness Center operating room, a separate facility upholding high surgical standards.
The Medical City has been officially recognized as a Center of Excellence for Enhanced Recovery after Surgery (ERAS) Program in the Philippines and in Southeast Asia.
ERAS is a multidisciplinary program aimed at improving patient outcomes and recovery after surgery. It focuses on the involvement of the patients being active participants in their own recovery and ensures that they receive only evidence-based care at the right time.
