What unfolded that day reflected the teamwork, commitment to excellence, and malasakit at the heart of The Medical City’s culture and values.

Employees of The Medical City (TMC) responded to an unexpected roadside childbirth emergency after witnessing a woman in active labor shortly after getting off the company shuttle on May 18.

Six TMC employees were on their way home from work aboard a shuttle traveling along Ortigas Ave. Extension in Taytay, Rizal when concerned citizens approached Admitting Associate Michelle Adones, who had just gotten off the vehicle, for help.

A pregnant woman was lying by the roadside, bleeding and in the middle of giving birth, while her young child sat nearby, crying hysterically.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation and knowing there are medical professionals on the shuttle, Adones immediately called for medical assistance.

“Are there nurses here?” she shouted.

Having heard the commotion and realizing what was happening, Surgery Suite nurse Mary Joyce Tangub and Intensive Care Unit nurse Annedel Ortiz immediately stepped in to provide immediate care despite the unpredictable environment and lack of medical equipment.

Calmly working together under pressure, Tangub attended to the mother as the baby was being delivered and safely caught the newborn as it emerged in no less than five minutes. Using available materials from the mother’s belongings, the nurses improvised a way to tie the umbilical cord while ensuring both mother and child remained stable as they waited for an ambulance.

The mother was reportedly already on her way to the hospital to give birth when the incident happened.

Tangub recalled, “We thought to ourselves: We must do something. We need to be resourceful since we don’t have proper medical tools… we must use what we have to save both the mother and the baby.”

Meanwhile, Ortiz focused on monitoring the baby’s condition by checking for crying, breathing, complexion, and other immediate signs that the newborn was healthy and responsive.

The rest of TMC employees, Nutritionist Dietitian Mika Janella Lo, Administrative Associate Amelia, and Radiology Clerk Jesusa Acerden also helped the nurses by providing alcohol, wipes, and other available materials needed during the emergency.

“Everyone is trying to pitch in what they can contribute. Even something as simple as alcohol was already a big help during that time. What’s most remarkable to me was our teamwork – even though we didn’t know each other personally, we were all trying our best to help the mother and her baby,” Ortiz shared.

When emergency responders arrived, the nurses properly endorsed the case before the mother and her children were transported to the hospital for further medical care.

Both the mother and her newborn are reportedly doing well.

Living the commitment to care

What unfolded that day was more than an emergency response. It was a demonstration of composure, teamwork, and humanity in a moment of uncertainty. These are the values deeply rooted in The Medical City culture and instilled in its employees through their commitment to compassionate service.

Though they did not know one another personally before the incident, the experience created a lasting connection among the employees involved: they were brought together by a shared decision to help when it mattered most.

For Tangub, Ortiz, Adones, Lo, Ocampo, and Acerden, the incident served as a reminder that healthcare extends beyond profession, title, or workplace. Whether inside the hospital or outside of it, the commitment to care for others remains the same.

“Should I encounter emergencies like these again, I will do everything I can to help save a life,” Adones said.

Their actions that day reflected the very heart of healthcare: showing up for others with compassion, courage, and the willingness to help, even in the most unexpected circumstances.
