The Medical City becomes the most JCI-accredited Academic Medical Center in PH

At its 58th Anniversary celebration, The Medical City announces it has achieved Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation as an Academic Medical Center and certification for its Primary Stroke Program.

Pasig City, Metro Manila – October 27, 2025  The Medical City (TMC) further solidifies its standing as the Philippines’ leading healthcare institution as it becomes the most Joint Commission International (JCI)-accredited Academic Medical Center in the country, with certifications for its Stroke and Heart Attack Clinical Care Programs.

In 2024, TMC was re-accredited by the JCI for its hospital program, and this year, the institution was elevated as an Academic Medical Center, a distinction granted to healthcare organizations that integrate world-class clinical care with medical research and education.

Its Department of Advanced Medical Education (DEPAMED) and the Clinical and Translational Research Institute (CTRI) are at the forefront of this distinction. DEPAMED anchors TMC’s commitment to continuous learning by managing its residency and fellowship programs, shaping the next generation of physicians and specialists. Meanwhile, CTRI drives innovative and collaborative biomedical and clinical research to bridge discoveries from the laboratory to bedside applications, while ensuring compliance with international standards of ethical and scientific rigor.

JCI accreditation for Primary Stroke Program recognizes TMC’s leadership in providing comprehensive, time-sensitive stroke management from emergency response and diagnostics to rehabilitation and recovery. At the heart of this program is the Brain Attack Team, a specialized group of neurologists, a neurology resident, a stroke nurse, and an interventional neurosurgeon, who respond immediately to suspected stroke cases, ensuring that every patient receives rapid and coordinated care within the critical window for treatment.

With these new accreditations, TMC affirms its position as the leading hospital in the Philippines, internationally certified for two of the leading causes of mortality in the Philippines—heart attack and stroke. The institution’s Acute Myocardial Infarction Clinical Care Program received its fourth JCI certification in 2024.

“These recognitions are not just milestones for The Medical City, but for Philippine healthcare,” said Dr. Ruben G. Kasala, EVP and CEO of The Medical City Ortigas. “They represent our vision to integrate education, research, and patient care to continuously raise the standard of what hospitals in our country can deliver.”

JCI accreditation is regarded globally as the gold standard for hospital performance, granted only to institutions that meet stringent requirements for safety, quality, and continuous improvement.

As The Medical City marks 58 years of service, these recognitions reaffirm its mission to deliver trusted, world-class care to every Filipino. They also reflect the institution’s collective pursuit of excellence, driven by quality, compassion, and innovation across its entire network.
